French authorities will start intercepting migrant vessels in English Channel following British demands
France has agreed to start intercepting migrant vessels in the English Channel, after months of insistence from the UK.
The change in policy comes after the British leader wrote to the President asking him to support the plan and stating there presently "have no effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.
French security forces have been authorized to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their passengers, according to official statements.
French authorities have infrequently acted to stop the heavily loaded boats departing from the coastline because it is considered too great a danger to both personnel and civilians.
"It is essential that we deploy these tactics this month... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Now, a French naval police spokesperson says personnel will start intervening at sea, with the objective of protecting human life.
Significantly, the official excluded the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had previously been reported as a potential technique to snarl the propellers of the boats.
The decision to intervene at all is a significant advancement, following a brief shift towards a stricter strategy this warmer season, which ceased when the previous Interior Minister departed from government.
That was highlighted in the summer month, preceding a summit between the Prime Minister and President, when French police were witnessed walking into the sea to damage the hulls of a boat.
Now French officials will again be permitted to intercept boats before they collect asylum-seeking passengers from the beaches of France's north coast, however it's uncertain how the small boats will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are currently delaying the commencement of interceptions and the human trafficking networks will be looking for methods to adapt to avoid interception, as they have done so often in the previous instances.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for response.
